DJ Drama is an American hip-hop DJ born in 1978 as Tyree Cinque Simmons. He began his career in his native Philadelphia then moved to Atlanta to attend college and further immerse himself in music. While in Atlanta, Drama met the rapper T.I., and eventually garnered attention as his DJ. He also began hosting a popular series of mixtapes titled “Gangsta Grillz” which featured a number of popular hip-hop artists. Drama also produced the “Dedication” mix series, the second of which, “Dedication 2”, was listed as one of the ten best recordings of 2006 by the New York Times. In 2007 Drama released his first album, “Gangsta Grillz: The Album”. This recording featured such artists as Young Jeezy, Willie the Kid, Rick Ross and T.I. There were a number of successful singles from this album including “Takin’ Pictures” and “The Art of Storytellin’ Part 4”. Drama’s second album was released in 2009. “Gangsta Grillz: The Album (Vol. 2)” included collaborations with Akon and Snoop Dogg. This was followed by a third album, “Third Power,” in 2011. It featured the single “Oh My” and the sounds of Wiz Khalifa and Fabolous as aid. Drama’s success continued with his 2012 album “Quality Street Music”. This recording debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at number 15, and on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at number three. The follow-up effort, “Quality Street Music 2,” was released in 2014. In addition to his recording success, Drama also co-founded Aphilliates Music Group with Don Cannon and DJ Sense. He tours regularly and in 2014 was named the A&R for Atlantic Records, responsible for scouting and developing new talent.
