American singer/songwriter/actress Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan on August 16th, 1958. She currently lives in New York City when not touring or traveling the world. For many, Madonna is considered the queen of pop/dance music as she was massively influential over multiple decades. Since the beginning of her career in 1979, she has amassed over 300 million in record sales, making her the number one selling female artist of all-time. Success came very early for Madonna. Her self-titled debut album would rise to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart in 1983. In 1984, Madonna stormed the world with her follow-up album Like a Virgin, which hit No. 1 in the US and many other countries. The album sold an amazing 21 million copies. She was just getting started as nine more albums would reach that No. 1 US Billboard target. Those albums included True Blue (1986), Like a Prayer (1989), the controversial Erotica (1992) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). In total, she would release twelve singles that would dominate the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, including "Like a Virgin", "Crazy for You", "Live to Tell", Papa Don't Preach" and "Music". It should be noted that many of her singles would illicit controversy due to some overtly sexual lyrics, not to mention visual campaigns that were risqué. Madonna’s efforts have always been recognized as she has won 273 awards that include three American Music Awards, 39 Billboard Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards. She also won an Academy of Motion Pictures award in 1997 as Best Actress for her role as the legendary Evita from the movie of the same title. Other important film credits includeA League of Their Own (1992), The Next Best Thing (2000) and Die Another Day (2002).
