Canadian actress/singer/songwriter Nelly Kim Furtado was born on December 2, 1978 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This pop/latin pop/R&B artist has sold over 40,000,000 records during her career that began in 1996. She was discovered by A&R executive Beth Halper in 1999 and immediately signed to a record deal with DreamWorks Records. By October of 2000, her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, was ready for release. The album was both a critical and commercial success, having reached #2 on the Canadian Albums Chart and #24 on the all-important US Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart. The very first single from the album was "I'm Like a Bird" went to #1 on the Canadian Chart and #24 on The Billboard Hot 100. She released her follow-up album entitled Fokelore in 2003, and the best was yet to come with the release of Loose in June of 2006. The album shot straight to the top of both the Canadian and US Billboard Albums Charts, selling 12,000,000 copies worldwide. The new album was responsible for the release of two singles that hit #1 in Canada and the US. Those songs were titled "Promiscuous" (featuring Timbaland) and "Say It Right". These two songs would earn her 2006 Grammy nominations for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals ("Promiscuous") and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance ("Say It Right"). The former song actually earned her a Billboard Music Award for Top Pop 100 Song. It is notable that Ms. Furtado won a Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (I'm Like a Bird"). Also, she has received 10 of Canada's Juno Awards, including Best Singer of the Year on three occasions. Furtado went on to release Mi Plan in 2009 and The Spirit Indestructible in 2012. She was awarded a Grammy for "Best Female Pop Vocal" in 2010 for Mi Plan.
