Eminem is one of the best-selling artists in hip-hop history, easily the biggest crossover success the rap genre has seen in years. Rapid, fluid, dexterous, and unpredictable, and thanks to his mentor Dr. Dre, he had the music to match: thick, muscular loops evoking the terror and paranoia Em's music conjured. With hits like "My Name Is," he ruled the airwaves in the 2000s, but it wasn't long before the depth of his art became clear, helped by his self-starring biopic 8 Mile. A number of demons led him to shut down for the second half of the decade, an absence that ended in 2009 with the album Relapse. ~ Jason Ankeny
