Baroness plays an eclectic brand of heavy metal, embracing the ferocity and sharp technique of new millennium metal but with melodic accents and intelligent guitar work that suggest the influence of indie rock and post-punk bands. Formed in 2003 and based in Savannah, Georgia, Baroness made their recording debut in 2005 with the EP First and began winning audiences over with 2007's The Red Album. While touring in 2012, their bus crashed through a guardrail and fell 30 feet. All survived but two members suffered fractured vertebrae and left the band. It guitarists carried on with a new rhythm section. They re-emerged with Purple in 2015 produced by Dave Fridmann. ~ Mark Deming
