Combining glossy '80s synth pop and arena-friendly choruses on singles such as "Pompeii," London's Bastille have sold millions of albums. The band formed in London in 2010, originally a solo project of singer/songwriter Dan Smith. Bastille attracted attention not only for their lush, '80s-inspired melodies and literate, emotionally raw lyrics, but also for their videos, which ardent film buff Smith edited together from old movie footage. A trio of singles during 2011-2012 paved the way for "Pompeii," which rose to number two on the U.K. charts in 2013. It carried the subsequent album Bad Blood to number one, and the band into the rarefied air of multi-platinum, award-winning indie acts. Wild World followed in 2016, with the single "Good Grief" hitting the U.K. Top 20. ~ John D. Buchanan
