Something of an indie rock supergroup, New York City's Battles features members of such venerable '90s alt-rock acts as Don Caballero and Helmet, as well as vocal improvisor and guitarist Tyondai Braxton (son of free jazz mainstay Anthony Braxton). The band plays a highly cerebral brand of electronics-based rock that simply floored fans and critics when it first appeared on disc in the early 2000s. Combining elements of electronica, prog rock, jazz, and even a touch of glam, Battles established themselves as one of the most enigmatic and original bands in contemporary music. Their debut full-length, MIRRORS, appeared in 2007.
