Born James Oppenheim in Massachusetts, Boney James is a solid saxophonist who incorporates elements of R&B, pop, and hip-hop into his jazz music. James spent the latter half of the 1980s as a multi-talented sideman, lending his keyboard and horn skills to such musicians as Morris Day and Randy Crawford. He made his debut as a bandleader with 1992's Trust and was soon signed to Warner Bros., where he remained until his move to Concord Records in 2006. A pioneer of urban jazz, he has received two Grammy nominations and had several Gold-certified records. ~ Scott Yanow
