Charlie Daniels is the fiddle-playing leader of the Charlie Daniels Band, a Southern rock group with country leanings. Daniels formed the band after working for several years as a popular session musician in Nashville, and albums like Fire on the Mountain and Nightrider enjoyed platinum sales in the early 1970s. By the end of the decade, the Charlie Daniels Band had refashioned its sound to include more down-home country influences, and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" became a number one hit in 1979, even crossing over into the pop charts. The band then remained a popular concert attraction for over 20 years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
