Hailing from the city of Copenhagen, Denmark, Communions are a four-piece indie rock outfit known for their nostalgic '80s sound. Brothers Martin Rehof (vocals and guitar) and Mads Rehof (bass) formed the band with high-school friends Jacob van Deurs Formann (guitar) and Frederik Lind Köppen (drums) in 2014.
As they grew older, they discovered they shared many of the same tastes in music and the arts in general, and started attending jam sessions at the Mayhem rehearsal space in Copenhagen. The practice space was home to many artists dominating the industrial and synth-heavy scenes of the city, although the boys found their niche in crafting songs that traversed the post-punk and new wave sounds of the '80s with the bright, indie pop/rock anthems of the '90s and beyond. After extensive jamming and writing, Communions went into the studio and came out with four songs and their debut release, the Cobblestones 7", put out by the independent Danish label Posh Isolation. The release caught enough attention for the band to go back into the studio and record more material, eventually delivering the single So Long Sun/Love Stands Still and the Communions EP, both released through the London-based label Tough Love Records.
Communions were gaining increasing attention and acclaim from critics for their celestial, hook-laden guitar work, pop-infused vocal melodies, and romantic, bleak, and bold songs about youth and love, ultimately becoming a nostalgic pop act professing their love for past styles and movements while remaining a part of the Zeitgeist. Success burgeoned for the quartet as they embarked on small-scale European tours, exposing their sound to wider audiences, while also writing for their debut full-length. Their unique sound, hard work, and extensive touring eventually caught the attention of American label Fat Possum Records, who signed Communions to a record deal. Their debut album, Blue, was released in February 2017. ~ Rob Wacey
