Known for extreme heaviness, both in its sludgy sound and its members’ weight (at one point exceeding 300 lbs. apiece), New Orleans rockers Crowbar earned a hefty following on the crest of doom metal’s second wave. Led by the gruff, dark vocals of its one continual member, Kirk Windstein, the foursome mixed the classic sludge-tone rock of Black Sabbath, the intense riffery of AC/DC, and the intricate progressions of Metallica, with a world of other styles (in grand NOLA fashion) for the unique sound debuted on Spitfire in 1991. The band consistently marched to the head of the metal class over the following two decades.
