Extra Golden play a unique mix of American rock and African benga, a burbling dance style popular in Kenya. The project began when Ph.D. student (and member of the band Golden) Ian Eagleson was studying benga, and met members of the Kenyan band Orchestra Extra Solar Africa in 2000. Along with Golden bandmate Alex Minoff, Eagleson began collaborating with Otieno Jagwasi and Onyango Wuod Omari of Orchestra Extra Solar Africa. The group recorded their debut, OK-OYOT SYSTEM in a nightclub in Nairobi. When Jagwasi passed away from liver failure in 2005, the project seemed to be over, but when Thrill Jockey Records released OK-OYOT SYSTEM in 2006, the remaining members were inspired to continue. With benga star Opiyo Bilongo, Extra Golden recorded their sophomore effort HERA MA NONO in 2007.
