Formed in Oxford, England by longtime friends Yannis Philippakis (guitar) and Jack Bevan (drums), Foals -- whose name is a play on the etymology of Philippakis' name -- began as a way to protest against the proggier sounds that were popular in both Oxford and in Philippakis and Bevan's former band, the Edmund Fitzgerald. The quintet's poppy, jittery, and upbeat math rock/post-punk sound eventually landed them a deal with Transgression Records, and in June 2007 they went to New York to record their debut album, 2008's Antidotes. Largely dropping the math rock and settling into an atmospheric post-punk revivalism, their third album, 2013's Holy Fire, was their first to chart outside of Western Europe. The persistently driving What Went Down followed in 2015. ~ Marisa Brown
