Leader of the insurgent country group the Jayhawks, Gary Louris joined the group shortly after it formed in Minneapolis in 1985. The Jayhawks were signed to American Records for their breakthrough album, 1991's Hollywood Town Hall, and scored an opening slot on tour with the Black Crowes. Guitarist/vocalist Mark Olsen left the band after one more album, leaving Louris at the helm for two more releases before the band broke up. Louris launched a solo career with 2008's Vagabonds, and continued his membership in the all-star roots rock collective Golden Smog, having played with the band since the release of its debut EP in 1992. ~ Erik Hage
