Formed from the ashes of two Australian punk bands--the Victims and Cheap Nasties--Hoodoo Gurus were in the vanguard of the Australian indie rock scene in the '80s. Melding psychedelia, power pop, rockabilly, and punk in one tautly melodic brew, the Gurus evolved from louder, snottier early albums like STONEAGE ROMEOS and MARS NEEDS GUITARS! to the more fleshed-out pop sound of BLOW YOUR COOL! and MAGNUM CUM LOUDER while keeping their sardonically kitschy lyrics, the band's trademark, at the fore. They released three albums--and the breakout college rock hit "Miss Freelove '69"--in the '90s before their 1997 break-up. They relapsed in the '00s with new recordings and tours.
