Brighton-based Kovak make catchy, '80s-style new wave and dance-pop influenced by such icons of the genre as Blondie, Eurythmics, and Madonna. Formed in Brighton around 2009, the group went through several lineup changes before settling on the core trio of Belgian-born vocalist Annelies Van de Velde, guitarist Karl Bray, and drummer Darren Bray. After the release of their 2009 debut, Heroes & High Heels, Kovak began building a strong local following. Their 2012 single, "Killer Boots," garnered the band yet more attention after it was put into rotation on Radio 2. Two years later, the group's acoustic cover of Sia's "Chandelier," hit 100,000 views on YouTube during its first eight weeks online. In 2015, Kovak delivered their sophomore full-length album, Modern Lovers, featuring production from Dom Beken (the Orb, High Frequency Bandwidth). ~ Matt Collar
