Loverboy is perhaps the canonical band in a peculiarly 1980s genre of highly commercial, hook-filled hard rock that was ideal for the FM radio of the era. Formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1980, Loverboy was led by singer Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean. Their first three albums, Loverboy, Get Lucky, and Keep It Up, spawned numerous hits including "Turn Me Loose," "Workin' for the Weekend," and "Hot Girls in Love." The band has continued touring and releasing albums from time to time. Bassist Scott Smith died in a freak boating accident in 2000, but the band pushed on, releasing albums well into the 2010s including Just Getting Started in 2011 and Unfinished Business in 2015. ~ Charity Stafford
