Massive Attack were one of the pioneers of British dance music. Their sound was a dark, seductive combination of hip-hop beats, atmospheric reverb-laden guitars and samples, soul hooks, deep bass grooves, and ethereal melodies. Their debut album, Blue Lines, set the pace for much of the non-techno British dance of the 1990s, including that of Portishead and former Massive Attack member Tricky. Subsequent albums Protection and Mezzanine proved to be critical and underground hits, both in England and across the globe. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
