One of the many offshoots of the Toronto-based Broken Social Scene collective, Metric is a muscular blend of early-21st century indie rock and pastel-shaded new wave. Fronted by keyboardist/singer Emily Haines, the band, which debuted in 2003, has a winning way with synth-driven pop hooks, best evidenced on its second album, Live It Out, which garnered a U.S. gold album upon its 2005 release. They had even more success with 2009's Juno Award-winning Fantasies, which went platinum in Canada and charted in the U.S., and after having their songs featured in the 2010 films The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 2012's Synthetica hit the U.S. and Canada's Top 15. ~ Marcy Donelson
