The cosmic alternative/experimental/post-rock band Mogwai were formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating their own distinctive brand of "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single "Tuner. Subsequent recordings like Young Team, Kicking a Dead Pig, Come on Die Young, Rock Action, Happy Songs for Happy People, Mr. Beast, and The Hawk Is Howling earned the band a large and loyal following at home, as well as a formidable international audience. ~ Jason Ankeny
