Among rock's most tenacious free spirits, Neil Young is a prolific gadfly who frequently jumps from languid folk-inspired music to noisy, full-on rock & roll, while visiting any and all points in between. A powerful songwriter and muscular, elemental guitarist since rising to fame with Buffalo Springfield in the '60s, Young pursued a less restricting path in his solo career, and while he enjoyed his biggest hit with the laid-back country-rock of Harvest, his catalog encompasses everything from dark tributes to fallen friends to blistering political broadsides, though his strongest work came from his collaborations with Crazy Horse (and his most accessible work was with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). Still active and outspoken in the 21st century, Neil Young is a respected elder and a purposeful musical rabble-rouser. ~ Mark Deming
