Born and raised in Detroit, Royce da 5’9” began rapping in his teenage years. After meeting then-unknown MC Eminem in 1997, the two formed a duo Bad Meets Evil, recording a handful of tracks together and releasing a single on Game Recordings in 1998. Royce's own solo LP, ROCK CITY, was released in 2002 and spawned the singles “Boom,” produced by DJ Premier, and “Rock City.” After a publicized beef with Eminem’s group D12, Royce returned with his sophomore effort in 2004. Sporting a distinctively murkier tone in both production and content, DEATH IS CERTAIN won the MC accolades from fans and critics alike. Following a year-long bid for DUI, Royce released the internet-direct mixtape THE BAR EXAM in 2007.
