Born Sam Falson in Sydney, Australia, Sam Sparro moved with his family to Los Angeles at age ten. The son of a gospel singer, he began singing in church, and also acted and danced from a young age. As a teenager he traveled to Sydney and then to London, where he dove headfirst into the music scene, before returning to Los Angeles. Sparro shot to fame in the United Kingdom with the release of his 2008 debut single, "Black and Gold," with a style of music derived from contemporary R&B and highlighting his gospel-trained vocals. Although harking back to the 1980s, Sparro's thoroughly modern style is driven by electronic dance production techniques. His eponymous debut album arrived in 2008, followed by Return to Paradise in 2012. ~ Jason Birchmeier
