Death metal band Suffocation were formed in New York in the early '90s, comprised of vocalist Frank Mullen, guitarists Doug Cerrito and Terrance Hobbs, bassist Chris Richards, and drummer Mike Smith. Released on Roadrunner Records, the group's 1991 debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten, became quite influential in the grind/death metal community. Several albums followed into the mid-'90s, but drummer Smith departed and the group disbanded, only to re-form in 2003 with Smith back in the lineup. Souls to Deny arrived in 2004 on Relapse, ending the group's six-year hiatus. Released in 2009 by Nuclear Blast, Blood Oath marked the band's first official entry in the Billboard charts. Pinnacle of Bedlam, Suffocation's seventh studio album, arrived in 2013, also on Nuclear Blast. ~ John Bush
