The Antlers is the alias and sometimes band of vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Peter Silberman. The Brooklyn-based musician first garnered national acclaim upon the release of his bedroom-recorded In the Attic of the Universe. The artist’s gentle, sensitive, claustrophobic songs, delivered in a whispery falsetto reminiscent of Jeff Buckley’s quietest moments, appealed to discerning critics and agoraphobes everywhere. The sprawling Hospice (2009) upped the ante considerably, alternating full songs with short instrumental pieces that highlighted the lyrics’ tales of death, suffering, and the complex personal relationships that accompany them. Combining elements of acid folk, shoegaze, and ambient music, Silberman and his Antlers compatriots mine a particularly rich emotional and musical landscape.
