THE BLACK DOG
The Black Dog (also appearing variously as Black Dog Productions, Balil, Xeper, and Plaid, among others) forged a challenging, relentless combination of early techno, electro, and hip-hop with a penchant for odd time signatures and high-tech atmospherics. The English group was immediately placed in the emerging "intelligent techno" category upon the release of its full-length debut, 1993's classic Bytes. The Black Dog went dormant in the mid-'90s, but Ken Downie, the group's lone constant member, resurfaced with new accomplices for a spate of albums released from 2005 through 2010, including Silenced, Radio Scarecrow, Further Vexations, and Music for Real Airports. ~ Sean Cooper
