This Canadian guitar rock band has proved massively popular in its native country, garnering numerous Juno awards, while earning comparisons to Green On Red and early R.E.M. further abroad, for their jangly, acoustic-electric aesthetic and penchant for hooks. The Tragically Hip originally formed in 1983 at Queen’s University, and were signed quickly signed to MCA Records after a series of explosive live shows. The Ontario-based band achieved triple platinum status with their 1989 debut album, UP TO HERE, and were soon touring with the likes of Neil Young and the Who. In more recent years, they have signed to the smaller but respected Rounder imprint, Zoe Records, and have experimented with a leaner sound with more keyboards. Lead singer Gordon Downie has also published a book of poetry and released solo albums.
