The War on Drugs
Mixing the grand-scale guitar attack of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine with a melodic sense and lyrical perspective that recalls Bob Dylan roaring down Highway 61, Philadelphia's the War on Drugs formed in 2005 and promptly became a frequent presence on the Philadelphia music scene, while gigging occasionally in New York City. In 2007 the band completed its debut EP, Barrel of Batteries, posted online as a free download. Positive press for both the EP and the group's powerful live shows led to a record deal and the delivery of their full-length debut, Wagonwheel Blues, in 2008. They had a commercial breakthrough with their third album, 2014's Lost in the Dream, which reached the Top of 30 of the Billboard 200. ~ Mark Deming
