Originating from the small town of South Elmsall in West Yorkshire, this UK indie pop band was formed in 2005 by David Kay (vocals/guitar), Chris ‘Ev’ Etherington (guitar/keyboards), Dale ‘Dez’ Wathey (bass), Duncan ‘Zed’ Morrison (drums), and David Glover (keyboards/percussion). Kay, Etherington and Morrison were playing in another band and recruited Wathey and Glover after parting company with their singer. After relocating to the larger environs of Sheffield, and with Kay adopting vocal duties, the quintet released two limited edition 7-inch singles on the Russian Doll label in 2006, ‘Bonfire Of The Night’ and ‘Hannah We Know’. They also began to cultivate a reputation as an eccentric live act, with gaudy stage wear, balloons and glitter all figuring prominently. Although they had been together for barely a year, the band landed a major label contract with Parlophone Records and worked with renowned indie rock producer John Leckie on their debut album. Free School Milk played to the band’s strengths, jaunty guitar pop replete with charming melodies and quirky lyrics, with ‘I Will Wait For You’, ‘Ashes And Diamonds’, ‘Hannah We Know’ and ‘I’ve Got To Go’ notable highlights.
