Formed in Canada in the early '80s, Voivod were one of the first thrash metal bands to make an impact worldwide. Their groundbreaking 1984 debut, War and Pain, was highly unconventional, with an almost avant-garde feel at times. Their brilliantly titled follow-up, Rrröööaaarrr, consolidated their reputation, but by 1989’s superb Nothingface, influences such as progressive rock were apparent in their song construction. Their musical skills enabled them to transcend their thrash roots while retaining a strong fan base right across the metal spectrum. 1997’s Phobos featured a track, "M-Body," co-written with Jason Newsted of Metallica. Newsted officially joined the band in 2002, and the new lineup toured as part of Ozzfest in 2003.They issued a self-titled album on Newsted’s Chophouse label the same year.
